San Jose and the Central Valley are characterized by green hills that can rise as much as 1,200m (3,936 ft.) above sea level. With a spring like climate year-round, this is Costa Rica's primary agricultural region, with coffee farms making up the majority of landholdings. Within 2 hours or so from San Jose you will be able to see volcanoes, go river rafting, visit a butterfly garden or do a Canopy tour!
Tortuguero
TORTUGUERO National Park covers an area of 19,000-hectare. Also know as the natural Venice of Costa Rica due to its jungle canals that interact with a dense, virgin lowland rainforest. Small boats and canoes will help you to discover the park that protects the nesting beach of the green turtle and the chance to see more than 300 bird species, 57 species of amphibians and 111 of reptiles, including three species of marine turtles; 60 mammal species; including jaguars, tapirs, ocelots, cougars, river otters, and manatees.
Arenal
This is the place to see and hear volcano activities. Arenal is one of the world's most regularly active volcanoes. Frequent powerful explosions send cascades of red-hot lava rocks tumbling down the western slope, and during the day you will see the lava flows rumble. This nature show is best done at night when the orange lava glows against the clear sky, but since the volcano borders a region of cloud and rainforests, the volcano's cone is often covered by fog. In the same area you will find the Arenal National Park which covers an area of more than 2,880 hectares (7,200 acres) where the trails through forest and over old lava flows inside the park are gorgeous and fun. Another attraction is the lake arenal, the largest in Costa Rica.
Monteverde
These amazing "green mountains," area features a variety of natural places, picturesque paths, flora- and fauna-watching opportunities, wildlife, hiking, and canopy tours, trips to suspension bridges and visits to butterfly and frog gardens. Here you will find the famous Monteverde Biological Cloud Forest Preserve which is one of the most developed and well-maintained natural attractions in Costa Rica. The trails are clearly marked, regularly traveled, and generally gentle. The cloud forest here is lush and largely untouched.
